“To change and to change for the better are two different things.” ~ German proverb
I know that what is
happening right now
is what is happening
right now.
Yet, in my humanness,
I shift into thinking of
future and especially
of past
moments
instead of [...]
No matter how much I prepare, mapping out my project, getting inspired, setting up the tools and resources I’ll need, following my creation, scheduling time, doing what works for me, and so on, surprises seem to come up along the way. You probably have plenty to teach me when it comes to rolling with [...]
Thanks for making it this far with my countdown. If you haven’t read parts one, two, or three, please check them out first and then come back here to continue the journey together. Your comments are welcome, as always.
Creativity at its best is a matter of following and leading. I learned about “following and leading” from InterPlay where this is one of the basic forms or practices. The rules are simple enough: participants chose to either follow or lead at any given moment. When leading, I initiate. I start from nothing. When [...]
(Part 1 of this series is here.)
How do you connect with something to inspire yourself? Some people seem to constantly be searching for it. Others seem to always have it inside themselves, ready at a moment’s notice.
Creativity requires inspiration. You may [...]
Creating things is a very enlivening process. The nature of making stuff is that it comes from the center — that impassioned internal something — that humans often hide from the rest of the world. Sharing one’s creative work is a revealing, an open-hearted act that for some is quite scary. This hiding and revealing [...]
I try not to complain about rain.
There’s something beautiful and calming
about the way that it splashes,
Creates a drumbeat
on the earth,
a pulse on our heads…

I’m very curious about creativity and inspiration: Where does creativity come from? How different is it for each person? What makes human beings creative? What is the creative process for each artist and why does it seem to be so different for individual creative people? Can science verify anything about creativity and what inspires us [...]
I’ve been telling myself
That I have to.
And I know it is not true.
Have To
Builds walls and fortresses that hold in
Nothing.
It cannot contain anything but vacuum
For it is the hardened place of boredom
And obligation.
So, this is not the time for
The moon does not blaze its way
From the cusp of the horizon
To the heights of the atmosphere.
It is content to meander slowly,
Incrementally
From the tops of the ridges
To the apex of its nightly rounds.
There, [...]

muse and music for the present moment
I look for ways to re-invigorate our human experience of life. I want us to drink up every moment with enlivening spontaneity. One of the ways I do this is with improvisation -- especially improvised music. With voice, guitar, percussion, piano (keyboards) and friends, I develop "in the moment" creations. I also play classical and pop music for the vast joy it brings to know the composers and songwriters of the past and present through their music.
